Most thermal processes in the textile and nonwoven industry, like thermal bonding, drying and curing, create some so called VOC’s.

VOC’s are Volatile Organic Compound (Unstable compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen). These compounds, mixed with air, form part of the smoke that is discharged from ovens and are dangerous to humans, damaging to nature and lead to the formation of smog. Basically it could be illegal to continue discharging them!

The solution proposed by Bombi Meccanica is the Thermal Oxidation

Oxidation causes VOC’s to be broken and reformed in new and safe compounds.

To be specific : CnH2m + O2 + Heat = NCO2 + H20 + Heat

In Thermal Oxidation process, the contaminated air is heated, breaking apart the harmful compounds that bonds into harmless compounds of carbon dioxide and water vapour.

Thermal oxidizers are composed, essentially, by 3 parts :

·      The burner

·       The combustion chamber,

·       The built-in heat exchanger.

The burner, usually gas fired, is used to warm up the air coming from the stack, up to the respective oxidation temperature. The oxidation takes place in a huge combustion chamber, designed according to the volume of the air to be treated. Turbulence is also created inside this chamber in order to ensure a proper mixture of VOC’s and oxygen.

The Combustion chamber is constructed from special steel, suitable for high temperature operation. Insulation is achieved with hi-tec material, without the need to use bricks, cement and any other heavy elements, that would further increase the need for heating (Thermal inertia).

After the smoke is oxidized, it passes trough a heat exchanger where part of the energy is used to pre-heat the incoming smoke. The heat exchanger minimises the system’s fuel consumption and finally, the clean, uncontaminated air is exhausted into the atmosphere.

As an option, the residual heat can be used to warm up the existing oven using further heat exchangers, which can also be supplied by Bombi.

Simpler and cheaper than thermal oxidizer, water scrubbers find application in some specific work.

Smokes enter in one vertical tower where they meet, in contrary flow sense, a big water flow, atomised by nozzles. This water sprayed by the nozzles, removes the oil from the smokes, that goes on the bottom of the tower.

Then the smokes passes another section separates the water from the air. After this the air in sent out.

Water is collected in the bottom of the tower.
